Crisis......that is !

I was just noticing that you get the prettier crinkled effect when you actually quilt the thing TO DEATH, such as in stippling or fan quilting. But when I noticed the stains, I forgot all about that !

I finished the Heaven's Gate quilt and excitedly took a few photos before throwing it into the washer for a quick rinse, and into the dryer for 'crinkling'.
Surprise, surprise.........apparently, I didn't prewash the batiks.......or if I did, it didn't set the color ! First, I noticed that the backside had bleeding around the places where the red and red/violet 'diamonds' were quilted. Then, upon examining the front of the quilt, I found a huge red splotch where a diamond must have lay against that square for a few minutes, just leeching its color out !

I've thrown it back into the washer with soap this time, but it looks like the stains are going to be permanent. I guess they got set when I dried it the first time. Oh, well.......back into the dryer she goes, and I'll greet her with the unconditional love she deserves, no matter how she looks when she emerges !

Oh no! I'm so sorry about that. I am bad about pre-washing my fabrics and have had that happen once as well. My hope that was with continued washing it might fade. Can't say if it did or not, as it was a gift. Still, the quilt is beautiful and I love the pieced back!
ReplyDeletewhat a pity...but it is gorgeously crinkly as you say ...hopefully you can ignore the staining and will never do it again...lol!
ReplyDeleteHow heart breaking to see a fabric's dye run. I'm not a prewasher..and had this happen with a green one time. I laid the quilt on a towel and hand scrubbed the areas that had the problem with a bit of Dawn dish detergent and warm water, and it lightened.
ReplyDeleteNow I use dye grabber sheets when I wash quilts. They really do grab any excess dye in the wash...and don't let the quilt sit wet. Dry right away.
In spite of the dye run..it's a darling quilt and your hand quilted border is so pretty. :)
oh that would make me so sad...you seem to be taking it well.
ReplyDeleteOhhh...Well as Eleanor Burns says...Can you see it from across the room? (paraphrase) Or was that Mary Ellen Hopkins? Anyway - the quilting design is a great compliment to the design and the colors, back and binding are fab! It is a baby quilt and it broke in now...ready for a real baby :)
ReplyDeleteToo optimistic...probably :( But what else to do now but make the best of it :)
It's fine ! Good thinking, Wanda.......definitely ready for a REAL baby ! But, really, you'd probably have to know that that fabric wasn't colored that way in the first place (the one on the front), and if it bothers me enough, I'll applique something over it ! The stains on the back are barely noticeable now, after a washing. I'm probably the only one who would even see them unless I point them out. Thank goodness I chose a backing fabric that has color variation behind the bunnies to start with, rather than a solid !
ReplyDeleteSorry about the comment moderation.....I got spammed on this post, so I'll probably keep it for a week or so.
